The Season I Almost Stopped — and What I Found on the Other Side of That Honesty

The Question Nobody Asks Out Loud

There was a season in my building life where I genuinely didn't know if I was going to make it.

Not financially. Something deeper.

I didn't know if what I was building was worth what it was costing — in time, in relationships, in the version of myself I was becoming in the process of pursuing it.

That question doesn't get talked about enough in entrepreneurship and resilience conversations. We talk about tactics. Capital structures. Hiring decisions. Execution frameworks. We share the milestones and the lessons learned and the strategies that worked.

We rarely talk about the moment you look at what you're building and ask: is this still the right thing to be pursuing?

That question — honest, uncomfortable, and impossible to answer quickly — is where I spent one of the hardest seasons of my building life.

The personal development that actually changes a builder isn't the book or the conference or the morning routine. It's the season where you're forced to answer the hard question honestly — and you choose to stay for the right reasons.

What Made It the Hardest Season

Here's what made that season particularly hard: the business wasn't failing.

There was no external crisis forcing the question. No financial emergency that justified stepping back. No obvious reason to stop that anyone else would have recognised from the outside.

The difficulty was entirely internal. I had become unclear about why I was still in it. The original reasons — which had been genuine and had carried me through earlier hard seasons — had slowly been replaced by something else. Momentum, maybe. Obligation. The sunk cost of five decades of identity built around building.

I was still executing. Still showing up. Still moving the business forward. But the conviction underneath the execution had become quiet in a way I hadn't fully noticed until the quiet got loud enough that I couldn't work around it anymore.

The Honest Reckoning

What I found when I finally stopped trying to work around it was a reckoning I should have had earlier.

Not with the business. With myself.

Why am I still building? Not the historical answer — the one that was true ten years ago, or twenty, or thirty. The current answer. The one that holds for who I am now, in this season, with what I know and what I've lost and what I still genuinely care about.

That question — sat with honestly, without the pressure of a deadline or an investor or a team watching — produced the clearest answer I've ever had about what I was doing and why.

It wasn't a comfortable answer. It required letting go of some things I'd been carrying that had stopped being true. And it required being honest about some things I'd been avoiding looking at directly.

But on the other side of that honesty was a conviction I hadn't felt in years. Not renewed enthusiasm — something quieter and more durable than that. A clarity about what I was building toward that had nothing to do with how the market was performing or what anyone else thought about what I was doing.

Entrepreneurship resilience isn't built by avoiding the hard question. It's built by sitting with it long enough to find the honest answer — and choosing to stay for the right reasons.

What That Season Built

I've thought about that season often in the years since. And what I understand now that I didn't fully understand then is that it was the most important personal development work I've done as a builder.

Not the strategy work. Not the leadership development. Not the market knowledge accumulated across five decades.

The work of getting honest about why I was still in it.

Because that honesty — that clarity about purpose that comes from having asked the hard question and sat with it long enough to get the real answer — is what carries you through every subsequent hard season. Not enthusiasm. Not momentum. The knowledge that you're here for the right reasons.

The entrepreneurs who build something lasting aren't the ones who never questioned whether they should keep going. They're the ones who asked the question honestly, found their answer, and built from there.

That clarity doesn't make the path easier. It makes it yours.
